Have you ever had a roach problem that you could not control? They get everywhere! It can feel like an uphill battle as you seal everything with caulk trying to make your abode impervious to the outside. Then the harsh chemicals come into play. You begin to wonder how bad these chemicals could be. If you use the chemical that kills the whole hive it can make you feel guilty. You just killed an entire roaches family.
See, in the South people are nice and so are these roach-like creatures called Palmetto Bugs. They are large and roach-like. They have jerky, hesitant strides and long antennas that move to and fro in a skeptical fashion. It is not uncommon for them to be at the two-inch mark. They scurry around on your porch all the time and on occasion you may find one inside your home.
In the event that they are in your house they are not bad roommates. They do not break into things like bags or boxes of food, or at least I haven't had that happen yet. They also never come in swarms, there is usually only one at a time. Some of them fly too, which makes knocking them off the ceiling so you can catch them more fun. Usually they clumsily plod along until you catch them under a cup, slide them over a rigid piece of paper and throw them outside.
One night I was eating my dinner on the porch and there were tons of palmetto bugs walking around. I wanted to see what would happen if I poured a small amount of wine down next to me along with a piece of food. Sure enough a palmetto bug came up next to me and ate and drank with me. I wonder if it got tipsy from the wine.
